About DPA5
The Dearborn Protocol Adapter 5 was designed by DG Technologies (Dearborn Group) and is a widely used heavy-duty vehicle interface. Low-cost copies are also sold, often bundled with a specific OEM program.
Supported vehicles
- Heavy- and medium-duty trucks, buses and engines on J1939 and J1708/J1587, plus CAN, J1850 and ISO 15765 over J2534.
Works with (genuine DPA5, per DG Technologies)
- Allison DOC, Bendix ACOM, Caterpillar Electronic Technician, Cummins INSITE and other RP1210 software.
- DG Technologies states that John Deere, Kubota and CNH (Case/New Holland) software is not supported by the Dearborn adapter. Copies sold "for CNH" rely on unofficial setups.
Strengths
- An industry-standard RP1210 adapter, supported by many OEM programs.
- Comes with DG Diagnostics for basic fault and parameter reading.
Limitations
- The OEM software and its licences are separate.
- Copied units may not work with all programs, and some only run on old Windows versions.
- DG Technologies now sells the DPA XL as the successor.
OBD4 does not provide software, licences or downloads.
