About BMW ICOM Next

ICOM Next is the current generation of BMW's "Integrated Communication Optical Module", the box that connects a workshop PC running ISTA to the car. It replaced the ICOM A1, A2 and A3.

What it does

  • Connects to the car's OBD socket and talks DoIP (Ethernet) to F, G and I series cars, and the older D-CAN and K-line buses for E series.
  • Links to the workshop PC or network by LAN or Wi-Fi, so several workstations can share it.
  • Used by ISTA for diagnosis and by ISTA programming to update or replace control units.

For independent workshops

  • BMW recommends the ICOM Next for ISTA. Independent workshops buy time-based ISTA access through BMW's aftersales online system and use it with an ICOM or another supported pass-thru device.
  • For coding apps and E-series hobby work, a simple ENET or K+DCAN cable is far cheaper but cannot do everything ISTA programming needs.

Good to know

  • Copies of older ICOM models are common; ISTA programming over an unstable connection can leave a control unit unusable.
