Terms of Use

Last updated: 4 November 2026

These terms apply when you use OBD4. OBD4 is free to use. By creating an account, you agree to them. If you only read the site, the sections on content and information still apply.

Accounts

  • You must be at least 16 years old to create an account.
  • Give accurate details and keep your password safe. You are responsible for what happens under your account unless it was used without your fault.
  • One person, one account, unless we agree otherwise. Do not impersonate others.
  • You can ask us to delete your account at any time through the contact page.

Rules for content

You must follow the community rules, which form part of these terms. You must not publish illegal content, or use OBD4 to break the law, attack the service, or collect data from it in bulk without permission.

Your content

You keep ownership of what you publish. You give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, display, format and distribute it on OBD4 and in search results. The licence lasts as long as the content stays on OBD4, including after your account is closed, where your contributions remain without your name. You confirm that you have the right to share what you publish.

Information on OBD4

Tool profiles, compatibility details, fault code explanations, VIN results and community advice are general information. They may be incomplete, out of date or wrong, and they do not replace manufacturer documentation or a qualified mechanic.

  • Safety: working on vehicles can be dangerous, and changing control modules can disable a vehicle or its safety systems. You decide whether to act on any information, and you must follow the manufacturer's procedures.
  • The law: you are responsible for making sure your work is lawful. Rules on emissions, roadworthiness, type approval, odometers and immobilisers vary by country. Software licences also apply.
  • Other sites: we do not control linked sites and are not responsible for them.

OBD4 doesn't sell tools or software on this site and is not a party to any purchase you make elsewhere.

Reporting illegal content

Anyone can tell us about content they believe is illegal. Members can use the Report link. Anyone can use the contact form. Please include the exact URL, an explanation of why the content is illegal, your name and email address, and a statement that you believe the notice is accurate and complete. Your name isn't needed if you are reporting certain offences, such as those involving child sexual abuse material.

We confirm receipt, decide carefully and objectively, and tell you the outcome and how to challenge it. If we suspect a crime that threatens someone's life or safety, we inform the authorities.

Moderation and account measures

The community rules explain how moderation works, including the automatic checks we use. We may hide, restrict or remove content, and warn, suspend or close accounts, if there is a breach of these terms or the law. We act proportionately and consider the rights and interests of those involved. We give a clear reason when we restrict your content or account, unless the law prevents it.

We may also suspend, after a warning, those who frequently post manifestly illegal content or send manifestly unfounded notices.

Complaints and disputes

You can complain about a moderation decision, or a decision not to act on your notice, free of charge for six months through the contact page. A person reviews each complaint, and we tell you the result and our reasons. You can also go to court or, where available, use a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. Going to a certified body or court doesn't require you to complain to us first.

The service

We work to keep OBD4 available and accurate, but we may have downtime, and we may change or stop features. If we stop the service altogether, we will try to give reasonable notice and a chance to request your data.

Our liability

Nothing in these terms limits liability for intent or gross negligence, for death or personal injury, or any liability or consumer right that cannot legally be limited. Your statutory rights are not affected.

Otherwise, because OBD4 is provided free of charge, we are not liable for loss or damage arising from reliance on information on the site or from content written by members, including damage to a vehicle, control unit or data.

Ending your use

You can stop using OBD4 at any time. We may close an account for serious or repeated breaches, as described above. Sections that by their nature should continue, such as the content licence and liability, remain in force.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms when the service or the law changes. We tell members about material changes at least 30 days in advance by email or on-site notice, unless a faster change is legally required. If you don't agree, you can close your account before the change takes effect.

Consumer rights

If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you can bring a claim in the courts there.
