About Ford FDRS

FDRS (Ford Diagnostic and Repair System) is Ford's current dealer tool. It covers roughly 2018 and newer vehicles and runs alongside the older IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System), which covers 1996 to selected 2018 models.

Which Ford tool do you need?

  • FDRS: recent Ford and Lincoln vehicles.
  • IDS: older Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. It needs Ford's own VCM hardware.
  • FJDS: Ford's J2534 application for module programming.

What it can do

  • Network tests, fault codes and data logging.
  • Module programming, as-built configuration and service functions.

Subscription

  • Sold through Motorcraft Service. Owners report that an IDS subscription includes FDRS, but not the other way round.
  • Prices below have changed over time, and some options may be limited to certain account types.

Strengths

  • Reference coverage for new Ford models.

Limitations

  • Needs a constant internet connection for most programming.
  • For everyday module changes on older Fords, FORScan is far cheaper.

Good to know

Use a battery maintainer during programming. OBD4 does not provide software, licences or downloads.
