About VCDS

VCDS (VAG-COM Diagnostic System) is an aftermarket diagnostic package from the US company Ross-Tech. Its depth on Volkswagen Group cars comes close to dealer tools for everyday work, which has made it the standard choice for enthusiasts and many independent VW and Audi specialists.

Supported vehicles

  • Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda passenger cars from about 1996 to current models.
  • Coverage of newer cars depends on the software release, so check the interface and version for very recent models.

What it can do

  • Auto-Scan of every control module, with fault codes and freeze-frame data.
  • Measuring values with graphing and logging, output tests and basic settings.
  • Long coding, adaptations and service resets, including the coding helper that explains individual bits on many modules.

Hardware and licensing

  • You download VCDS free of charge. The licence is inside the interface, so the full program only runs with a genuine Ross-Tech cable.
  • Enthusiast interfaces are limited to 3 or 10 vehicles; Professional interfaces are unlimited. VIN-limited versions can be upgraded.

Strengths

  • Very deep Volkswagen Group coverage and a large public wiki of procedures.
  • One purchase, with free software updates and no subscription.

Limitations

  • Windows only. Browser use needs the more expensive HEX-NET and has fewer functions.
  • Not a flashing tool: control-unit software updates need ODIS.
  • Volkswagen Group only.

Good to know

  • VCDS was originally called VAG-COM, and many owners still use that name.
  • Save an Auto-Scan and the original coding before changing anything.

Hardware you need

Interface / hardware Status Price Notes
Ross-Tech HEX-V2 Official Enthusiast $199 (3 VINs) or $299 (10 VINs); unlimited Professional version costs more USB interface. The usual choice.
Ross-Tech HEX-NET Official Enthusiast (10 VINs) about $449 at US dealers; Professional version costs more USB and Wi-Fi, plus VCDS-Mobile in a browser.
