P2463: Diesel Particulate Filter Restriction - Soot Accumulation (Bank 1)

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P24xx — Auxiliary emission controls

What does P2463 mean?

P2463 means the soot load in the particulate filter has passed the level at which the engine still regenerates it on its own. GM's 2009 Duramax sets it at 70 g or more for 5 minutes, the 2014 Cruze 2.0 diesel at more than 32 g for 30 s, both as Type A codes; GM's 2018 diesels use the pressure-based soot model with 120 failures in 150 samples. On the Cruze the ECM then turns on the MIL, reduces engine power and blocks normal regeneration, so a dealer service regeneration is needed. GM's bulletin on the related driver messages notes that the filter cleans itself about once per tank and needs driving above 50 km/h; extended idling and stop-and-go traffic keep it from finishing. The underlying cause is not always the driving: Stellantis traced P2463 with P2453 to broken differential pressure sensor wiring and PCM grounds, Mack to a failed aftertreatment fuel doser. Check those before regenerating, or the code returns.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • DPF full or exhaust filter message in the cluster
  • MIL on and reduced engine power
  • Higher fuel consumption

Common causes

  • High Regenerations not completed because of short trips or long idling
  • Medium Differential pressure sensor, its hoses or wiring reading too high
  • Low Fault that prevents regeneration (fuel doser, temperature sensor)

Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
