P2194: System Too Rich at Higher Load (Bank 2)
Standardized SAE J2012 code · P21xx — Fuel & air metering and auxiliary emission controls
What does P2194 mean?
P2194 means bank 2 has reached the lower limit of its trim in the upper load zone: the ECM is removing as much fuel as permitted, yet that bank still runs rich. Because air mass, fuel pressure and canister purge feed both banks, a rich error caused by them usually brings P2192 along. When P2194 stands alone, look at bank 2 itself: a leaking or over-delivering injector, an injector of the wrong flow class after a repair, or a bank 2 front sensor that reads lean so the controller keeps adding fuel. Comparing the trims of both banks while holding a high load on the road or a dynamometer separates the two cases. No manufacturer publishes P2194 criteria; GM uses P2180 with a factor limit of 0.78 for the corresponding range. The driver mainly sees higher consumption.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Bank 2 long-term trim strongly negative at high load
Common causes
- High Leaking or over-delivering injector on bank 2
- Medium Bank 2 front sensor reading lean
- Medium Air mass sensor reading high or fuel pressure too high (usually with P2192)
