P2192: System Too Rich at Higher Load (Bank 1)
Standardized SAE J2012 code · P21xx — Fuel & air metering and auxiliary emission controls
What does P2192 mean?
P2192 is the rich-side limit of the bank 1 trim in the upper load zone: the controller has pulled as much fuel as it may and the front sensor still reports excess fuel. Typical sources grow with demand, such as an air mass sensor reading high, fuel pressure above specification, or injectors that over-deliver or drip at high rail pressure; on direct-injection engines a leaking high-pressure injector is a prime suspect. Kia documents the code by name: bulletin ENG 146 (2015) lists P2192 with P2188 and other codes on 2012 to 2014 Rio and Soul with the 1.6 GDI engine and cures it with an ECM software upgrade rather than parts. GM handles the same load range as P2178 with a lower factor limit of 0.78. Expect higher consumption and possibly a fuel smell; P2188 is the idle counterpart, P2178 the off-idle one.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Fuel smell or dark exhaust under load
Common causes
- Medium ECM calibration issue covered by a software update (e.g. Kia 1.6 GDI)
- Medium Air mass sensor reading too high
- Medium Injector leaking or over-delivering at high rail pressure
- Low Fuel pressure above specification
