P215C: Output Shaft Speed - Wheel Speed Correlation
Standardized SAE J2012 code · P21xx — Fuel & air metering and auxiliary emission controls
What does P215C mean?
P215C compares the transmission output shaft speed with the output speed calculated back from the wheel sensors. Unlike P215B it does not judge the final vehicle speed but the agreement between these two measured sources. GM's 2019 hybrid tables set it as Type B, MIL after two trips, when the output shaft and the average from wheel and motor speeds differ by more than 50 or 60 rpm for 0.23 s. FCA uses the code widely: bulletin 21-031-14 updated the TCM of the 2014 Charger and 300 AWD with the 845RE gearbox because P215C set during braking, 21-022-23 reprograms the 2023 Charger 8HP50 for the same code, and on the 2014–2017 Jeep Cherokee a broken power transfer unit input spline produces P215C with P1720 and grinding noises, covered by a warranty extension. Shift quality or AWD functions may suffer.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Harsh or irregular shifting
- Grinding noise or loss of all-wheel drive (transfer unit damage)
Common causes
- High Transmission control software too sensitive, for example under braking (FCA bulletins)
- Medium Mechanical driveline fault such as a broken transfer unit spline (Jeep Cherokee)
- Medium Faulty output shaft speed sensor or wiring
- Low Faulty wheel speed sensor or mismatched tyre sizes
Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
