P2004: Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Open (Bank 1)

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P20xx — Fuel & air metering and auxiliary emission controls

What does P2004 mean?

Intake manifold runner control (IMRC) uses flaps in the intake manifold; petrol engines switch runner length or tumble, diesels close swirl flaps at low load. P2004 means the flaps on bank 1 stay open when the ECM has commanded them closed, judged from the position feedback. Ford checks commanded against actual plate position after coolant exceeds 40 °F (about 4 °C) and needs four events to set the stuck code; its 2012 summary covers both vacuum and electric actuators. Volkswagen's 2024 bulletin for Golf GTI, Golf R and Arteon lists P2004 as stuck open alongside P2006, P2014 and P2015, caused by contamination in the runner control valve N316. Volkswagen's 2017 bulletin for the 2.0T (BPY, CCTA, CBFA), by contrast, labels P2004 as flap stuck closed, so the manufacturer text in the scan tool may differ from the generic title. Typical causes are a sticking or broken flap shaft, a vacuum leak or a failed control valve.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on
  • Weaker low-speed torque

Common causes

  • High Flap shaft sticking, worn or separated inside the manifold
  • Medium Runner control valve contaminated or corroded
  • Medium Vacuum hose or actuator diaphragm leaking

Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
