P0DE2: Hybrid/EV Battery Cell Balancing Circuit N Stuck Off

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P0Dxx codes

What does P0DE2 mean?

P0DE2 closes Ford's list of balancing codes: circuit N does not discharge when commanded. Ford's 2018 hybrid summary has the BECM judge this during a 100 ms window at key-on, contactors still open, comparing each of the six cells with the average against 75 mV over two power cycles. A switch that stays open has no immediate effect on driving, but the imbalance adds up. Intersil's application note AN141 puts numbers on this: cells count as matched when their capacities lie within 3 percent, and a gap of only 150 mV at full charge can cost a series pack a quarter of its capacity or more. Group N will therefore be full first and limit what the whole pack can store. Stuck-on counterpart: P0DE1.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light without driving complaint
  • Charging ends early because group N is full first
  • Electric range shrinking over months

Common causes

  • High Open bleed resistor in circuit N
  • Medium Balancing switch of group N not turning on
  • Low Cell tap of group N detached from the busbar

Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
