P0DAB: Hybrid/EV Battery Cell Balancing Performance
Standardized SAE J2012 code · P0Dxx codes
What does P0DAB mean?
P0DAB is the overall verdict on cell balancing: the battery controller sees that bleeding charge off the fuller cells no longer brings the pack back into line, so the spread between cells stays too wide. CARB 13 CCR 1968.2 (e)(15.2.3) requires hybrids to check exactly this. Mazda sets it on the 48 V M Hybrid Boost of the CX-90 and CX-70 (MHB module: P0DAB:17; SGC2/DMCM: P0DAB:00) with the check engine light; if it returns at once after clearing, the 48 V battery is replaced, otherwise program MSP66 reflashes. Jeep lists P0DAB-00 with MIL for Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe and cures it with BPCM software. Faults of a single balancing circuit carry their own codes from P0DAC on.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- Check engine light and hybrid system warning in the cluster
- Mild hybrid assist, start-stop and regeneration switched off (engine-only operation on Mazda)
- Reduced electric range or usable battery capacity
Common causes
- High Battery controller software that judges balancing too strictly (FCA BPCM and Mazda MSP66 reflash)
- High Cells aged unevenly so the spread grows faster than balancing can correct it
- Medium Internal fault in the battery assembly (Mazda 48 V battery replaced when the code returns at once)
- Low One or more balancing switches or resistors no longer working
Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
