P0BBC: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense Z Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P0Bxx — Hybrid and electric propulsion

Safety-critical system. Faults in airbags, brakes, steering or high-voltage components can put people at risk. Follow the manufacturer's service information and safety procedures, or have the vehicle checked by a qualified workshop.

What does P0BBC mean?

P0BBC closes the generic block of 26 cell voltage channels from A to Z; after it J2012 moves on to pack-level codes such as P0BBD and P0BBE. The code is meant for a Z signal that is unstable rather than absent. There is no manufacturer documentation for it: GM monitors channel Z from the 2011 Volt to the 2019 battery energy control module, but always with P0BB8 to P0BBB only, and no table contains an intermittent monitor. Its basis is CARB 1968.2, which requires battery voltage sensors of hybrid storage systems to be checked and faults to be narrowed down to the smallest replaceable unit. Should it appear, contacts that fail under vibration or heat cycling are the logical starting point.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Warning lamp appearing irregularly
  • Occasional brief loss of electric drive power

Common causes

  • High Intermittent contact on sense lead Z
  • Medium Joint at channel Z opening with heat cycling
  • Low Corrosion in the Z sense connector
