P06AF: Torque Management System Forced Engine Shutdown
Standardized SAE J2012 code · P06xx — Computer and output circuits
What does P06AF mean?
GM uses P06AF for a cross-check between two control modules: the monitored module (engine or transmission module, each with main and secondary processor) sends a fixed answer sequence over CAN only if both its processors work together correctly; the monitoring module (engine, transmission or hybrid control module) sets P06AF if the pattern is wrong or missing. In all GM tables from 2016 to 2025 it is type A – lamp in the first trip – and the torque management may shut the engine down for safety. Typical causes are processor or software faults in one of the modules, communication problems or supply interruptions. Look for further processor codes (P0606, P060A, P060B) and software bulletins. No other manufacturer document available to us uses P06AF.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Engine shuts off or does not start
- Reduced power
- Further processor or communication codes
Common causes
- High Software fault in engine, transmission or hybrid module
- Medium Processor fault in one of the modules
- Medium CAN communication disturbance between the modules
- Low Supply interruption or poor ground of a module
