P060A: Internal Control Module Monitoring Processor Performance
Standardized SAE J2012 code · P06xx — Computer and output circuits
What does P060A mean?
Electronic throttle systems use three levels: level 1 runs the engine, level 2 recalculates key values independently on the same processor, and level 3 is a separate monitoring processor that quizzes the main one and can shut down the throttle outputs. P060A means this monitoring processor (level 3) or its cooperation with the main processor is faulty: the question-and-answer game fails, an operating system call ends with an unrecoverable error, or the self-test of the monitoring module fails (Ford diesel: 5 s). Ford sets it with the check engine and wrench lamps since generation 3 throttle systems (older generation 2 without the check engine light); GM Europe's 1.6 L turbo rates it type C with a service lamp and reduced power. GM North America does not use P060A. Nissan (Rogue 2021) and Ford (Explorer 2.3 2025) fixed it by reprogramming – often there are no driving symptoms at all.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- Check engine light, at Ford also the wrench lamp
- Reduced power or limp mode
- Often no driving symptoms
- Rarely stalling or starting problems
Common causes
- High Faulty module software (update available)
- Medium Unstable supply voltage or poor ground at the module (weak battery, voltage spikes)
- Medium Internal hardware defect (monitoring processor, memory)
- Low Moisture or corrosion in the module or connector
