P240C: EVAP System Leak Detection Pump Heater Control Circuit High

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P24xx — Auxiliary emission controls

What does P240C mean?

Same as P240A with the control line shorted to supply. The leak detection pump, often called the DMTL module on European cars, pressurises the EVAP system to test it for leaks; newer pumps have a heater in the housing that dries out moisture and stops ice from seizing the pump in cold weather. With the heater circuit faulty the leak test may be skipped or give false results in winter; engine running is not affected.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • EVAP leak test does not complete in cold weather (readiness monitor not set)
  • Failed emissions inspection

Common causes

  • High Control line shorted to supply
  • Low Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  • Low Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
