P2181: Cooling System Performance

What does P2181 mean?

P2181 is the engine computer's verdict that the coolant warms up too slowly or settles below its target, almost always because the thermostat no longer closes. CARB requires the thermostat to be monitored and flags a failure when the warm-up stays more than 11.1 °C under the regulating point. GM (18OBDG03A) compares the block sensor with the radiator sensor during warm-up; if both rise together, the thermostat is open (Type B). VW's 2014 CC model expects 74–84 °C after a set amount of intake air; the Touareg with engine CNRB flags a gap of 7.5 K below the target. Audi, Bentley, Hyundai and Kia have bulletins tying P2181 to thermostats that stick or leak, Kia in part to software. Swapping the coolant sensor seldom helps. The heater stays lukewarm and fuel use climbs. P0128 is a similar thermostat code.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

• Check engine light, usually without any change in driving behaviour
• Temperature gauge rises slowly or stays below normal
• Weak cabin heating in cold weather
• Higher fuel consumption on short trips

Common causes

• High Thermostat not closing fully because of wear, corrosion or debris on the seat
• Medium Engine control software too sensitive, fixed by a reflash on some models (e.g. Kia SA463)
• Low Radiator fan running constantly and overcooling the engine
• Low Low coolant level or air in the system distorting the temperature reading
