P2175: Throttle Actuator Control System - Low Air Flow Detected

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P21xx — Fuel & air metering and auxiliary emission controls

What does P2175 mean?

P2175 tracks an air shortfall that develops slowly: over many operating points the engine receives less air than the throttle position predicts, and the learned correction finally exceeds its limit. A clogged air filter, carbon narrowing the throttle bore, a partly blocked intake or an airflow sensor drifting low are the usual reasons. No manufacturer documents P2175 publicly. GM bulletin PIP4578B illustrates the mechanism: with growing carbon deposits in a high-mileage throttle body, the computer learns to open the plate further, and after cleaning an idle relearn is needed. FCA's P2173 is the slow deviation in the other direction, and a Ford patent describes matching modelled with measured throttle flow. Expect sluggish response and unsteady idle. P2174 is the sudden variant.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Check engine lamp
  • Sluggish response and low power
  • Unsteady or low idle

Common causes

  • High Carbon build-up narrowing the throttle bore
  • Medium Heavily clogged air filter or intake restriction
  • Medium Contaminated airflow sensor reading low
  • Low Idle or airflow adaptation not reset after throttle cleaning

Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
