P212E: Throttle Position Sensor/Switch G Circuit Intermittent

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P21xx — Fuel & air metering and auxiliary emission controls

What does P212E mean?

P212E is reserved for brief dropouts or spikes on throttle position signal G, the kind that clear again before a steady low or high fault can be confirmed. No manufacturer documents this code publicly. GM, which assigns G to sensor 2 of the bank 2 throttle body on a twin-throttle engine, reacts to such glitches with its range checks instead: P212C below 0.195 V and P212D above 4.805 V each need only 0.14 s. CARB requires input sensors to be monitored for circuit faults, which is the duty this slot covers. In practice the trigger is a loose terminal, a chafed wire near the engine or moisture in the connector. Check the harness while flexing it with the engine running. The fault may vanish between workshop visits.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Warning lamp that comes and goes
  • Brief stumbles or power dips
  • Fault often not present at the workshop

Common causes

  • High Loose or worn terminal at the bank 2 throttle connector
  • Medium Harness chafed by engine movement, breaking contact now and then
  • Medium Moisture or corrosion in the connector
  • Low Momentary contact loss on the sensor track
