P0CEA: Hybrid/EV Electronics Coolant Pump A Performance
Standardized SAE J2012 code · P0Cxx — Hybrid and electric propulsion
Safety-critical system. Faults in airbags, brakes, steering or high-voltage components can put people at risk. Follow the manufacturer's service information and safety procedures, or have the vehicle checked by a qualified workshop.
What does P0CEA mean?
Here the pump circuit is electrically intact, yet the coolant it should move does not seem to arrive. GM documents it in the VICM tables of 2014 and 2016, the latter explicitly for the Cadillac ELR: with the pump enabled above 30 % speed for more than 300 s, the controller compares the power electronics coolant temperature with the temperature of the high-voltage charger. A gap larger than a calibrated value, separate for charging and for driving, or a charger hotter than 60 °C for over 600 s while charging counts as a failure; 32 of 40 samples at 250 ms set the code, Type B, two trips. Circuit faults (P0CE9, enable line) block the test. Weak flow from air in the loop, low coolant or a worn pump is the usual background; charging and drive power are cut back to protect the electronics.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp or hybrid system message
- Charging slows down or stops, especially in hot weather
- Reduced propulsion power during long or demanding drives
Common causes
- High Air trapped in the power electronics coolant loop after service or a leak
- Medium Low coolant level in the electronics loop reservoir
- Medium Worn or partly blocked pump delivering too little flow
- Low Skewed coolant or charger temperature signal distorting the comparison
Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
