P0CE2: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Coolant Control Valve A Control Circuit Low

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P0Cxx — Hybrid and electric propulsion

Safety-critical system. Faults in airbags, brakes, steering or high-voltage components can put people at risk. Follow the manufacturer's service information and safety procedures, or have the vehicle checked by a qualified workshop.

What does P0CE2 mean?

P0CE2 points to a ground short on the drive circuit of coolant control valve A. In the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and 2016 Cadillac ELR, GM's four-port battery valve is moved by a small motor with two driver lines. The hybrid controller sets P0CE2 when driver line 1 reads low while the valve should be travelling in reverse, with system voltage above 9 V (2011) or 10.2 V (2016); 90 failed samples out of 100 at 6.25 ms create a Type B code, so the MIL comes on after two trips. As long as it is active, the valve performance test is blocked. Typical findings are a wire chafed against the body, water in the connector or an internal short in the valve motor. With the valve stuck in its last position, battery cooling or heating may be restricted. Short to voltage is P0CE3, open circuit P0CDF.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • MIL after two trips (GM)
  • Valve does not move, battery thermal conditioning limited

Common causes

  • High Driver wire chafed through and shorted to ground
  • Medium Water or corrosion in the valve connector
  • Medium Valve actuator motor internally shorted

Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
