P0BF2: Drive Motor B Phase U Current Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P0Bxx — Hybrid and electric propulsion

Safety-critical system. Faults in airbags, brakes, steering or high-voltage components can put people at risk. Follow the manufacturer's service information and safety procedures, or have the vehicle checked by a qualified workshop.

What does P0BF2 mean?

GM runs P0BF2 as the offset test of the phase U current sensor in the motor B inverter. Each time the vehicle is started, while no current flows through the motor, the controller learns the sensor's zero point and compares it with a limit: 30 A on the 2011 Volt (Type A) and in the 2016 tables (Type A, after 0.1 s), 30 A on the 2012 and 2013 two-mode trucks (Type B, two trips, power stage open, P0BF3/P0BF4 not active) and 35 A in a 2019 table (Type A, after 0.4 s). Jeep lists P0BF2 on the 2020 Renegade and Compass 1.3 PHEV for Europe, together with the other motor A and B phase current codes, the turtle light and Service 4WD; the fix there is a software update of the hybrid control processors.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp
  • Turtle (limp home) light and Service 4WD light (Jeep)
  • Reduced electric drive power

Common causes

  • High Hybrid control processor software (Jeep bulletin 08-056-21/08-057-21)
  • Medium Zero point of the motor B phase U current sensor drifted past the limit
  • Medium Faulty current sensing electronics in the power inverter module

Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
