P0BEA: Drive Motor A Phase V Current Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P0Bxx — Hybrid and electric propulsion

Safety-critical system. Faults in airbags, brakes, steering or high-voltage components can put people at risk. Follow the manufacturer's service information and safety procedures, or have the vehicle checked by a qualified workshop.

What does P0BEA mean?

P0BEA is the performance check of the phase V current sensor in the motor A inverter. GM implements it as an offset test: with no current flowing at start-up, the learned zero point must stay within 30 A (2011 Volt, 2016 tables, Type A; 2012 two-mode trucks, Type B, with P0BEB/P0BEC not active) or 35 A (2019 table, Type A, after a 0.4 s delay). A sensor whose zero has drifted would distort torque control and the phase current balance. Jeep names P0BEA among the phase current codes of the 2020 Renegade and Compass 1.3 PHEV for EMEA markets, together with the turtle and Service 4WD lights; the remedy is a software update of the hybrid control processor and power inverter.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp
  • Turtle (limp home) light and Service 4WD light (Jeep)
  • Reduced electric drive power

Common causes

  • High Hybrid control processor software (Jeep bulletin 08-056-21/08-057-21)
  • Medium Zero offset of the phase V current sensor drifted beyond the limit
  • Medium Faulty sensing electronics in the power inverter module
