P0BB2: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense X Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P0Bxx — Hybrid and electric propulsion

Safety-critical system. Faults in airbags, brakes, steering or high-voltage components can put people at risk. Follow the manufacturer's service information and safety procedures, or have the vehicle checked by a qualified workshop.

What does P0BB2 mean?

Of the five X codes, P0BB2 is the only one without any public manufacturer description. It is intended for a sense X signal that flickers, drops out briefly or jumps between values. GM's Volt tables of 2011 and 2016 list channel X with circuit, range, low and high monitors, P0BAE to P0BB1, and no intermittent check. The code therefore rests on the J2012 structure and on CARB 1968.2, which requires hybrid battery voltage sensors to be monitored and the fault to be isolated to the smallest replaceable unit. In practice a technician would look for a contact that opens under vibration, moisture in a connector or a harness rubbing against the module housing.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Intermittent warning lamp
  • Sporadic hybrid system message

Common causes

  • High Contact on lead X opening under vibration
  • Medium Moisture or corrosion in the X sense connector
  • Low Harness X chafing against the module housing
