P0A4E: Generator Position Sensor Circuit High

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P0Axx — Hybrid and electric propulsion

Safety-critical system. Faults in airbags, brakes, steering or high-voltage components can put people at risk. Follow the manufacturer's service information and safety procedures, or have the vehicle checked by a qualified workshop.

What does P0A4E mean?

P0A4E is set when a generator resolver signal sits above its permitted range, which usually points to an open signal line pulled up by the input circuit or a short to a supply voltage. No manufacturer documents P0A4E publicly. Mitsubishi evaluates the same condition on the 2023 Outlander PHEV but reports it under its own codes: a sine or cosine voltage of 4.9 V or more for 0.21 s stores P0C67 or P0C6C. A Bosch patent explains how the averaged offset of the receiver coil lines reveals whether a line is shorted to supply rather than to ground. CARB requires out-of-range checks for hybrid input components. P0A4D is the low counterpart, P0A4B the general circuit code, P0A4C the plausibility check. The generator is usually shut off and the hybrid warning comes on.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system warning and MIL
  • Generator disabled, engine-only or no-start condition

Common causes

  • High Open resolver signal line or pushed-out terminal
  • Medium Signal line shorted to a supply voltage
  • Low Faulty resolver input stage in the power drive unit

Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
