P0954: Auto Shift Manual Control Circuit Intermittent

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P09xx — Transmission

What does P0954 mean?

The manual up/down request signal drops out or flickers for short moments, so a single tap may arrive twice, late or not at all. Unlike P0952 and P0953 the voltage is not stuck outside its window; it jumps between states without a matching lever movement. Typical triggers are loose pins in the shifter connector, worn contacts or a harness that flexes with the lever. A Chrysler patent shows how simple contact switches in the gate signal each request, a Volkswagen patent how Hall tip sensors and their lines are checked. No manufacturer documents this exact code publicly; CARB requires circuit checks. P0950 is the general fault. The driver notices missed or doubled manual shifts.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Manual shifts occasionally ignored or executed twice
  • Fault comes and goes, often over bumps
  • Manual mode temporarily switched off

Common causes

  • High Loose or spread pins in the selector lever connector
  • Medium Harness broken internally where it moves with the lever or steering column
  • Medium Worn or oxidised tip switch contacts

Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
