P0837: Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Switch Circuit Range/Performance
Standardized SAE J2012 code · P08xx — Transmission
What does P0837 mean?
The four-wheel-drive switch tells the engine module which transfer case range is engaged. 4WD low changes the ratio of engine to road speed by about 2.7:1 on GM trucks, so GM uses 'not in 4WD low' as an enable condition for idle speed and clutch pedal checks; that is why CARB requires monitoring such inputs. P0837 means the signal is electrically valid but implausible: the reported position does not fit the driving state, or a multiplexed resistor switch sits between its position windows. GM runs this check on the same part under P2771: switch 'not low' while the transfer case ratio is 2.6–2.8, or 'low' at 0.9–1.1 (diesel windows 5.7–8.0 and 0.7–1.55), under load and in gear. No manufacturer document available to us uses P0837.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- 4WD indicator flashes or stays off
- 4WD range cannot be selected or display wrong
- Possibly check engine lamp (depends on manufacturer)
Common causes
- High Shift linkage or transfer case not fully reaching the position
- Medium Position sensor out of tolerance (drifting resistance)
- Medium Contact resistance at the connector
- Low Mechanical fault in the transfer case (range jumps out)
