P073F: Unable to Engage Gear 1
Standardized SAE J2012 code · P07xx — Transmission
What does P073F mean?
'Unable to engage' means the transmission does not reach the commanded gear – the opposite of 'stuck in gear', where a gear cannot be disengaged. Documented users are dual-clutch transmissions, whose shift forks are moved hydraulically and watched by travel sensors: GM's 8-speed in the 2020–23 Corvette, Maserati's MC20 and – for the odd gears only – Acura's RLX Sport Hybrid, whose 'odd gear monitor' is part of an emission recall with permanent codes. No manufacturer publishes thresholds. P073F means the first gear, on the odd sub-gearbox, cannot be engaged; a gear that will not disengage is P072C, slip in an engaged gear P0731. GM's bulletin first runs a learn procedure and cleans valves only if system pressure codes are present; Maserati checks system pressure (20–30 bar). If neither helps, the mechanics are at fault.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- Gear 1 skipped or not engaged
- Transmission warning or check engine light, possibly limp mode with one sub-gearbox locked out
- Jerking, delayed pulling away or shifting
Common causes
- High Shift fork valve or solenoid in the mechatronic unit sticking (dirt, wear)
- Medium System pressure unstable or too low (pressure valve, pump, fluid level)
- Medium Shift fork, sleeve, synchronizer or dogs damaged
- Medium Learned shift fork or clutch values lost or wrong
- Low Module software or calibration
