P072B: Stuck in Reverse
Standardized SAE J2012 code · P07xx — Transmission
What does P072B mean?
Ford's DPS6 dry dual-clutch transmission moves its gears with two electrically driven shift drums whose position is read by Hall sensors: drum A shifts 1st, 3rd and 5th, drum B reverse, 2nd, 4th and 6th. Ford's 2012 summary lists 'stuck in gear' codes for each drum: the module commands the drum out of a gear, but the gear stays engaged. It gives no thresholds or MIL rating. P072B is the code for drum B: reverse cannot be disengaged. The transmission then locks out sub-gearbox B and can only use drum A (1st, 3rd, 5th), or the car is stranded. Slip in reverse is P0736.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms

Common causes
- Medium Shift fork or synchronizer for this gear sticking

- Low Transmission module
- Low On planetary automatics: clutch or brake not releasing (sticking valve)
