P070B: Transmission Fluid Level Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
Standardized SAE J2012 code · P07xx — Transmission
What does P070B mean?
Fluid level sensors in the transmission sump (capacitive or voltage-based) report the oil level to the transmission module; measurements are only valid under defined conditions – an Allison patent names fluid temperature, vehicle at rest, low input speed and a tilt correction. Such sensors are mainly found in heavy automatic transmissions. No manufacturer document available to us uses this code. P070B means the signal is present but implausible – it does not change, does not fit temperature or operating state, or lies outside the physically possible range. Such checks only make sense within the valid measuring window. A truly wrong oil level (overfilled, underfilled) or the wrong fluid can also appear as an implausible signal. The circuit fault is P070A.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- Warning or message about transmission fluid level
- Fluid level display implausible or unavailable
- Usually no driveability problems
Common causes
- High Fluid level sensor drifting or dirty (wear debris, sludge)
- Medium Fluid level actually wrong (over- or underfilled) or wrong fluid
- Medium Contact resistance in connector or wire
- Low Faulty tilt or temperature compensation (fluid temperature sensor fault)
Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
