P0709: Transmission Range Sensor A Circuit Intermittent
Standardized SAE J2012 code · P07xx — Transmission
What does P0709 mean?
The transmission range sensor (selector or multifunction switch, PRNDL) reports the selected range; it may be a multi-contact switch with a bit pattern per position, an analog sensor with two opposing voltages adding up to 5 V, or a contactless PWM sensor. Its second channel has its own codes (P2801–P2805). P0709 means the sensor A signal jumps briefly to invalid values or drops out without being permanently low or high. No manufacturer document available to us uses P0709 – Ford catches short invalid states under P0705 and P0706 instead – so the description follows the sibling codes. Sliding contacts in older selector switches are a typical source; the transmission may briefly lose the range and go into limp mode.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- Intermittent transmission warning or check engine light
- Gear indication flickers, brief shift jolts
- Occasional starting problems in P/N
- Occasional limp mode
Common causes
- High Loose contact or corrosion in the range sensor connector
- Medium Worn sliding contacts in the selector switch
- Medium Harness chafing on transmission or bracket, breaking when moved
- Low Misadjusted sensor or selector cable (position at the limit)
Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
