P06E2: Cylinder 12 Glow Plug Control Circuit Low
Standardized SAE J2012 code · P06xx — Computer and output circuits
What does P06E2 mean?
Diesel glow systems switch each plug through its own power semiconductor and switch off a faulty channel; CARB requires single-plug detection from model year 2010. P06E2 means the circuit to the cylinder 12 glow plug is shorted to ground or draws overcurrent. For cylinders 1–8, GM's engine-module drivers flag below 0.11 Ω to ground after two trips, and Ford's 2023 Power Stroke more than 22 A for 0.3 s or 20–22 A for 2 s while heating. The channel is switched off and the plug stays cold; the other plugs keep working. An internally shorted plug or a chafed wire is the usual cause. No manufacturer document available to us uses this code – it needs at least 12 cylinders, and the only US OBD II diesel above eight, VW's Touareg V10 TDI, has ten; the description follows cylinders 1–8.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- Check engine light (GM: also glow plug lamp)
- Harder cold start in frost
- Rough cold idle, white smoke after cold start
- Cylinder 12 misfire when cold
Common causes
- High Cylinder 12 glow plug shorted internally
- Medium Plug wire chafed through to ground
- Medium Burnt connector or terminal nut, tracking through oil or moisture
- Low Driver stage in the glow module defective
