P02FB: Cold Start Fuel Injection Control Circuit/Open

Standardized SAE J2012 code · P02xx — Fuel & air metering (injector circuit)

What does P02FB mean?

Cold start fuel injection is an extra injection system for cold starts – for example on flex-fuel engines running on high ethanol blends, where a Hyundai patent describes a small auxiliary tank, a cold-start injector and a heater. CARB lists such heated fuel preparation systems among the monitored output components. P02FB means the control circuit of the cold-start injection is open or has a general fault – a broken coil, a loose or corroded connector or a broken wire. The engine then starts poorly or not at all in the cold; once warm it runs normally. No manufacturer document using this code was found; unlike the older P0213/P0214, these codes separate the fault types.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard or no start in cold weather (especially with high ethanol)
  • Rough running right after a cold start

Common causes

  • High Coil of the cold-start injector or valve open
  • Medium Connector loose, corroded or pin pushed back
  • Medium Broken wire in the harness
  • Low Fuse or relay of the cold-start system
  • Low Driver stage in the engine module

Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
