C0053: Steering Wheel Position Sensor Signal B

Standardized SAE J2012 code · C00xx codes

Safety-critical system. Faults in airbags, brakes, steering or high-voltage components can put people at risk. Follow the manufacturer's service information and safety procedures, or have the vehicle checked by a qualified workshop.

What does C0053 mean?

C0053 concerns signal B of the steering wheel position (angle) sensor. The sensor delivers several redundant signals that the module checks against each other; C0051 is the general sensor code. Without a trusted steering angle ESC is switched off; after alignment work or battery disconnection the sensor often only needs calibrating. The code is a general fault for this component; the module stores it when the signal or circuit fails a check that no more specific code covers.

The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • ESC warning light on
  • Stability control and lane-keeping functions disabled

Common causes

  • High Sensor not calibrated after alignment or battery disconnection
  • Medium Sensor or clock spring assembly failed
  • Medium Wiring or connector fault

Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
