C0048: Brake Booster Travel Sensor
Standardized SAE J2012 code · C00xx codes
Safety-critical system. Faults in airbags, brakes, steering or high-voltage components can put people at risk. Follow the manufacturer's service information and safety procedures, or have the vehicle checked by a qualified workshop.
What does C0048 mean?
Generic fault on brake booster travel/position sensor. The travel sensor measures how far the booster input rod, and with it the brake pedal, has moved; on an electromechanical booster such as Bosch's iBooster this signal is what the control unit turns into a motor command, so a faulty signal reduces or removes power assist. If power assist is lost, the brakes still work through the master cylinder, but a much higher pedal force is needed.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- Brake system warning lamp or message
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Firmer brake pedal, longer pedal travel or higher pedal force
- Driver-assistance functions such as automatic emergency braking or adaptive cruise control may be disabled
Common causes
- High Sensor failed
