C0033: Right Front Tone Wheel
Standardized SAE J2012 code · C00xx codes
Safety-critical system. Faults in airbags, brakes, steering or high-voltage components can put people at risk. Follow the manufacturer's service information and safety procedures, or have the vehicle checked by a qualified workshop.
What does C0033 mean?
C0033 concerns the tone wheel (encoder ring) at the right front wheel, whose teeth or magnetic poles the wheel speed sensor reads. A cracked, dirty or missing segment produces a signal pattern the ABS module recognises as faulty. Without a plausible wheel speed the module switches off ABS and stability control for the rest of the drive. The code is a general fault for this component; the module stores it when the signal or circuit fails a check that no more specific code covers.
The code tells you which monitor failed, not which part is broken. Test before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- ABS, ESC or brake warning light on
- Stability and traction control may be switched off
Common causes
- High Cracked or damaged tone wheel
- Medium Metal debris or rust on the encoder
- Low Wrong hub or bearing with different encoder fitted
Likelihood is a general estimate across vehicles; your make and model may differ.
